Job Purpose

Lead the Mechanical function and contribute to the overall mission/objectives of the organization. Facilitate uninterrupted production to achieve the business plan pertaining to Ekalbara.

Principal Accountabilities

  1. Maintenance planning, scheduling, and controlling: Strategize suitable types of maintenance (preventive, predictive, shutdown, or scheduled).
  2. Ensure availability of resources such as spares, manpower, tools, equipment, and instruments.
  3. Monitor and implement schedules as planned.
  4. Define critical equipment and maintain 100% availability.
  5. Implement and monitor process safety management.
  6. Facilitate budget exercises for engineering functions: Prepare, propose, get approval, and monitor budgets.
  7. Propose CAPEX with necessary inputs, secure management approval, and execute projects.
  8. Impart training to team members and external parties (e.g., contractors).
  9. Stay updated with best industry practices and introduce innovative technologies or methods.
  10. Initiate modern technologies and innovative methods to align with industry standards.
  11. Lead initiatives such as 5S, TPM, cost reduction programs, sustainability, and energy-saving projects.
  12. Facilitate collaboration between and outside the team to achieve desired results.
  13. ??Coordinate with the project department for safe execution, commissioning, and operationalization of CAPEX/project activities as needed.

Major Challenges

  • Ensuring maximum uptime for aging assets, managing outdated equipment/technology, and handling incidental breakdowns.
  • Ensuring safety compliance among unskilled laborers and fostering a safety culture.
  • Managing limited data, engineering documents, and specifications to address person-based dependency.
  • Aligning personnel skills with job requirements.

Decisions

  1. Restoring equipment/plant after breakdowns in coordination with production functions and compliance.
  2. Interacting with contractors/vendors to ensure compliance with EHS and integrated management systems.
  3. Effective resource planning, scheduling, and allocation/reallocation.
  4. Monitoring and implementing quality parameters for maintenance functions.
  5. Presenting recommendations/options to superiors for approvals.
  6. Stopping plant/equipment operations due to malfunction or breakdown.
  7. Addressing poor EHS performance and initiating remedial actions.
  8. Approving budget allocations and proposing reallocations for exceeded values.
  9. Modifying plant/equipment/process/internal systems as required.
  10. Guiding team members to understand organizational goals and objectives.
  11. Resolving legal disputes as applicable.
  12. Sending reports/communications to statutory bodies.
  13. Clarifying roles, limits of authority (LOA), and appraisal-related queries for self and team members.

Internal Clients: Roles within the organization for day-to-day work: Leadership Team, Production Department, Materials Department, Integrated Management System, Quality Assurance, Finance Department, HR, IR, Security & Admin, EHS

 External Clients: Roles outside the organization for day-to-day work: Contractors, Vendors, Third-party agencies (e.g., IBR, PESO, Factory Inspectorate, Electrical Inspectorate), Government agencies/statutory bodies

Educational Qualifications

a)   Qualifications

Minimum Qualification: Degree in Mechanical Engineering

b)      Work Experience

Minimum 2 years heading maintenance in a chemical, or process industry.

Total experience of around 18 - 22 years.

Exposure to ERP, ISO systems, and EHS functions.

Experience in utility operations and maintenance.

Experience in executing small to mid-size projects or automation initiatives.

1.   FUNCTIONAL COMPETENCIES

Maintenance & Asset Management: Plan, schedule, and control preventive, predictive, shutdown, and scheduled maintenance; ensure critical equipment availability and target machinery uptime (95–96%).

Resource & Utility Expertise: Manage spares, tools, manpower, and contractors; hands-on knowledge of boilers, chillers, air compressors, pumps, HVAC, and other mechanical/utilities systems.

Process Safety & Compliance: Implement and monitor process safety management, ISO/EHS standards, and statutory compliance (IBR, PESO, Factory/Electrical Inspectorate).

Budgeting & CAPEX Execution: Prepare, propose, approve, and monitor annual maintenance budgets (~?10–12 Cr); plan and execute small to mid-size projects and CAPEX initiatives.

Project & Continuous Improvement: Lead modernization, automation, and engineering projects; implement 5S, TPM, cost reduction, energy efficiency, and sustainability initiatives.

Training & Cross-functional Coordination: Impart technical training, develop team capabilities, and collaborate with Production, Projects, QA, EHS, Materials, and external contractors/vendors.
